My first host was also free, I forgot who it was, but quite a good host with some ads at the top though, I was a host noob back then and didn't find any ad free hosts.
I am hosting with Dreamhost right now, they're alright.

My first host was www.angelfire.com
They offered 20 MB of space with tons of ads and only 1 GB of bandwidth. Totally crap.

Lol. I think all webmasters start with free hosts and get used to web building and then move on to paid hosting. I was hosted by friends, E10, anglefire, and tripod. Then I moved to paid and bought domains.

I can still remember my first host. It was something along the lines of "you post in our forum x amount of times per month and we give you free hosting." It turned out to be a scam with a bunch of ads and stuff. It was the first time I used cPanel so for a while I though it stunk.
