Will Free Hosting survive?
I have been reading the high cost need for the hosting infrastructure and expertise cost. Will it be possible for free host to survive?

Re: Will Free Hosting survive?
I HOPE so. Hosting is pretty pricey for the average user...especially children.

Re: Will Free Hosting survive?
I don't think so, the only reason why there is free hosting is because of Ad sponsers. But now people tend to go for Ad-Free Hosting...

Re: Will Free Hosting survive?
I really hope so, I always like to think of the Internet as a free and open space and people being able to make use of free web hosting would be an important part of that..

Re: Will Free Hosting survive?
I believe Free Hosting will survive at certain level but for the users who require more space and as someone said earlier no adverts then we will need to pay for this service.

Re: Will Free Hosting survive?
I don't really get the need for free hosting to be honest. It made a lot of sense to me in 1996. In 2006, not so much. With very robust reseller and lowcost hosting accounts for $5.00 a month or in some cases less, I just don't see why most people would subject themselves to the limitations of a free hosting solution.
That being said, there will always be some people interested, especially those less serious or committed to running a web site for the long term.

Re: Will Free Hosting survive?
I'm wondering what people use freehosting for these days...I don't use it anymore (I used to, a lot when I was younger). It was for hosting pictures and stuff, but now we have photobucket, etc.

Re: Will Free Hosting survive?
I often wonder at the need for free hosting, all these people must pay to get onto the Internet, so why not a few £ more for a host ?
At 16, I could afford to drink & smoke, it seems kids now are no different (in this respect) from when I was a kid, and with beer at over £2/pint and smokes best part of £5/packet then reliable paid hosting can't really be out of anyone's reach ?

Re: Will Free Hosting survive?
When I was a kid, I couldn't really afford that. And even then, I don't think my parents would've let me spend money hosting my own site. It's good for kids but that's about all, I guess.

Re: Will Free Hosting survive?
I'm sure they do. But as you said, drinking and smoking is more interesting/important than paying for your own webspace.

That is actually a good point? Who is the marketplace for the free host these days? Don't kids have access to myspace and places like that where they can have their one -off pages?
Anyone seriously making a website should not even give freehosting two thoughts. Heck a lot of people provide free webpages to users and members as a benefit.
So is there any market for "free webhosting" or will there continue to be one? Because who needs it when most people can get what they need for free anyways.
If I needed to post up a free web page, I might go to myspace or blogger. I would never even consider a free web host.

Re: Will Free Hosting survive?
There's too many free sites that tailor to peoples needs now. People might have used free webspace for a journal, personal page or pictures, videos... Now, off the top of my head, there's livejournal, myspace, photobucket and youtube. which totally removes the need for free hosted entire webpages. Maybe for people who want to share writing? Even then, there's sites for that...

Re: Will Free Hosting survive?
Well its difficult that free hosting will survive any more coz for buisness pepole go for paid hosting. As their buisness depends on hosting they need good services, good tech support and good connectivety.Even if you get a good freehosting then also we can't assure that it will serve us will.
If freehosting exisists thenit depends on small non-commercial site, personal pages or for children.

yup, definitely non-commercial. I wouldn't touch an online business witha free host with a barge pole!

Re: Will Free Hosting survive?
It will deffintly survive. For better paid hosting, the free hosting is almost like a trial version to test them out, and if you like them, then you can upgrade to better packages.

Re: Will Free Hosting survive?
If google can provide all sorts of services for free at customer end, free host will also survive with the same logic. While there is someone who has to pay for the service somewhere, it is by no mean the advertisers who are most likely to pay on your behalf.
There are some who will provide a certain amount of free hosting space for community service - They treat this a way to pay back to the society.
Whenever it comes to pricing, there is always someone who will cut the price to the minimum ($0.01? No. FREE). Whether it will survive will really depends on the management strategy.
There is no free lunch in this world. So if you are looking for something Free, expect to get 'nothing' (even if you have your hosting).
Nice day mate

Re: Will Free Hosting survive?
Good point influence. If google can survive, surely enough free hosts can. They usually put ads up on their free websites, which usually pay for the hosting itself.

great points. i do think free webhosting is on its way out...there are way too many other service offering webspace packaged with other stuff for stand-alone free services to survive much longer.
