Why the gap in prices

Why can there be such variations in prices for a domain name depending upon the registrar? I have often wondered about this.

The domain registrars often also offer hosting for example and other domain related services. By offering the domains cheaply they are trying to lure you in so that they can also make money on you with other services. Don't forget that the cheap price only applies to the first year of registration and that the second year the price will be considerably higher.
