What makes a good blog?

Earning money with a blog is being discussed elsewhere, but I wanted some opinions on what makes a blog worth making money.

I currently am doing a personal/self-help type blog - more for the writing experience than anything else. It only gets about 5 - 10 hits a day, but I haven't signed up with any one to get the increased hits.

I also only manage to update about once a week.

Is this the kind of blog that I could use to generate money?

Also, just how much money can an average blog expect to make?

I guess you could fill the white space with adsense like most people do these days, however is it exploitation to put ads on a self help site? Surely those reading it for help are probably the ones who will end up falling for the scam adverts you quite often see these days.

You can even look for good affiliate program and join payperpost like program to generate some revenue.

Just how do these affiliate programs work? I joined adsense on my old blog, but I was disappointed at how it made the site look. Since my writing is the most important thing, I would rather it not generate money. It defeats the purpose if the site looks bad or misleads the people who are reading it.

Affilate programs such as tradedoubler.com allow you to put banner / text ads on your site. Its maintly a way for companies ie Dell, to place their banners, and tradedoublers webmaster users take the code and put this on their site.
There are specs on how ya paid paid, either per click, or per sale made via your link etc.

The adsense ads are quite relevant to content, you can minimize their size of ads that display on your blog and limit to one or two ads rather than going for multiple ads on your site.

I use payposter as by suggested and I use MyLot. They pay a few cents will driving in traffic.

If readers find your self-help blog helping them, they will surely come back to read more. You can join affiliate programs that are related to the self-help posts you have. As for the hits, I don't also get that much hits. Instead of waiting for AdSense to give me a decent income, I find other ways to generate income from it.

Blogs in my opinion are a great and simple way to earn some quick cash, i dont believe you'll be able to pay rent or buy food with a blog alone (unless you recieve millions of hits) but you'll be able to earn some quick and easy revenue through advertisments.

Well 10 hits a day isn't enough to see any real money. I doubt any of the ten people will click a adsense ad any if they do you'll see cents. I think you should spread to word a little better then when you recieve more hits you'll maybe see more income.

I doubt you'll make much with a blog, unless you recieve thousands of unique hits a day.

I tried MyLot and didn't have much joy with it to be honest.

I don't think theres anything wrong with adsense on a self help blog, you can block dodgy ads, and if the blog is good then you're entitled to try to monetize it in my opinion.

Having a niche and a nice design makes you a good blogger.
The only problem is promoting your blog.
easywebbers is a crap blog but they get hundreds of pageviews daily and the admin gets bare money from it

online anything and everything is marketable and profitable.

Content writing and such have to be there to hold on to any audience. You can have the best design in the world but if your blog is crap you reap what you sow.

Content writing and pictures. People love eye candy. The blog needs to be laid out in a way that even an utter moron can easily grasp it.

I have a blog that is just a personal update of things happening in my life for my family and friends and I also post the ocassional rant about W. I can't see this as making any money.

I have one of those...it's never going to make money but it's a great way for my family to keep in touch with each other.

At least do adsense, you never know. I say this and I am not the greatest adsense fan.

That's true. It's a case, I suppose, of it might not help but it can't really hurt.
