a dedicated server is a computer allocated in a datacenter with a really good internet conection.

It's often faster and can offer your site it's own unique server. I'd recommend it if you run a larger site that requires a lot of bandwidth.

Yes, I often assumed from the popular mention of "dedicated server" that it was a server with tons of bandwith. Like it is "dedicated" to your site. I don't see many people offering this for free though

Dedicated server is a Standalone server. Its a Physical server on which only a single hosting account is setup. The resources allocated to a dedicated server will be used only by a single account and will not be shared with other accounts. You can even install any 3rd party application on the server as you get a Administrative access to the Dedicated server. You can also open, close or change any port of the server. Cost of a Dedicated server is more than a normal shared server because it has more recources allocated to it along with all the features.

Dedicated Hosting, Dedicated Server, Managed Server means, a company has taken a whole server on rent basis(lease) from a Data Center.A dedicated server is more secure, more private and, other things being equal, it will be faster and better suited to complex applications.The server hardware, routing equipment, network connectivity etc is monitored and maintained by the hosting company and the server software applications are maintained by the customer.
