What should I look for in a hosting plan?
Cost? Reliability? Space?

Anything?

What I should look for in a webhosting plan?
As a web host, I believe it is on your usage.
If it is for a ecommerce site, then Quality of Service, Uptime and reliability will be extremely important because every second counts. You cannot afford to lose a second to earn money. More importantly (but not essential), will be to offer SSL and ecommerce tools to get things started. Space and bandwidth should be at least 1GB and 10-20GB so ensure things run smoothly. The spec of server that you are hosted might be important due to the requirements of some scripts. SO take note.
If you are on a budget personal project, then cost is essential. Key is Value for Money. How reliable a host be with the lowest price.
Your second question: Bandwidth is about amount of traffice/download. Therefore, a graphical intensive or busy site will need more bandwidth. A good ratio, generally, for personal page is 1:20 while a business site will be about 1:30 (space vs bandwidth). However, cases differ due to their requirements.
Hope this helps.

Try ot find out if your free hosting allows direct linking to images (if that's important to you) otherwise you'll be in trouble with that

make sure that you read the small print if you sign up with a provider. Velcom automatically renew your service every year resulting in surprise charges on your credit card

I'd be surprised if many do offer this as it's open season for an image host and bypasses all the ad systems the hoster would have in place

Very true. Man it used to be so easy to get your site hosted somewhere, images and verything. Then the whole ad thing started and things got annoying. Does anyone know of any places that still actually allow direct linking?

Do you just need space to host images (not an actual website?)
Drop me a PM - I might be able to sort something out for you

I suggest Reliable and affordable webhosting company offering 24x7 true support and services, money back offer and 99% uptime coz your buisness depends on quality hosting support.
Space and bandwidth depends on your website popularity, its better to start with minimum and as your requirement increase then upgrade your bandwidth and space as per your needs.

Do you provide raw storage hosting, or just image hosting? I am thinking about down the road splitting things up and having a seperate server to host some data and images across my sites on one server that is not set up as a regular webhost.

Make sure it has decent space and bandwidth, something you shouldn't exceed, and one of the most important things is that they are reliable and have good support.

First you have to figure out what you need. If a basic service will cover you at startup go with that and upgrade. Look at best overall dollar value and ability to upgrade or downgrade as needed.

You need to know first what type of site are you going to develop. A forum needs a lot of bandwidth and database memory. An image hosting site needs a lot of space. A new personal blog will survive a basic plan. If you know your site, it will be easier to determine what you should look for.

If you hate moving hosts frequently, I would also suggest looking for scalability - a cheap, small package on a reliable host might be OK now, but if your web site grows, will you be able to upgrade easily to a different plan with the same host?

Re: What I should look for in a webhosting plan?
I think you need to consider a combination of factors when seeking a host. You want to find a plan that will fit the needs of your website (space/bandwidth). You also want a price that fits your budget but that offers good service and reliable hosting.
