I've noticed in the last couple of years that visa debit cards are popping up in kiosks at drug stores, walmart..etc. I think they are an outstanding idea, especially for kids who don't really need to get into the CREDIT aspect of such cards yet.

I agree that they could actually become a tool to teach kids how to handle credit.

They can be a great tool, but I worry that it gets the kids too used to paying with "plastic". Of course, if they have a solid grounding in the economics involved, they will be one step ahead of half of my freshman class in college.

These are extemely handy. The bad thing about the prepaid visas and so on is usually the start up fees, like 30 bucks or something and then you have say a 200 dollar limit. Would be good, but I would rather have the backed giftcards as mentioned by Accer. Still, they are much handier and safer than lugging an old check book around, and no balancing!

There used to be one called Splash Plastic, no fees with that just pay and go. I think it was taken over by someone and became a maestro card or something

Here: Splash Plastic – Prepaid Maestro & MasterCard – Home

Watch out for using them to buy gas! They can put a rather hefty hold on your card before you pump. If you are close to the line, it can make your card declined later.

Thanks Matthew, awesome! And thanks Technomom. Also, when makign a hotel reservation with debit or prepaids, they will not charge but authorize them in advance for the cost of the room (one night's stay). Got screamed at more than once working in the hotel industry over that!

Did they block a certain chunk on your card, Aquarian? Just curious! If they didn't that is very lucky for you

Gigi,
Peachtree in the "quilt City" triple charged me on mine once. Then tried to deny it. It was my bank that caught it. They just couldn't see how one person was staying 3 nights in one night.

No they did not and also I paid cash. Now I know Enterprise Car Rental tells you they block $800 when you rent a car.

Yeah, I really like the visa check card.
About the gift cards, though... what happens if you overdraw a visa gift card?

You can't. Lets say you have $11.21 left on it.....you try to charge $11.22 and it will decline the card.

You cannot overdraw any card for that matter. It will always be declined.
