Default Starting your own server...

Ok, this obviously isn't hosting, but I've always wondered what it would take to actually set myself up with a computer serving the web. Is it feasible? I've grown so accustomed to just getting web hosting that I haven't even looked into this. I know that the main challenge lies in getting yourself onto the web, but can individuals with little experience do this? What equipment would it take? Are there some how-to or faqs about this subject that anyone could point me to?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.. if only for curiousities sake. And if I'm totally unrealistic let me know too. Thanks!

Default Re: Starting your own server...

This has just started to be discussed here http://www.webhostingworld.co.uk/for...9.html#post220

But the main points are:
  • Yes - it is very possible (infact stupidly easy to do).
  • Your ISP's connection is no good for hosting website's
  • Yours ISP will probably disconnect you if they discover you hosting a website from home (this is not classed as personal use).
As a project then fine, setup a Linux box (far cheaper than a windows server licence) or use a 3rd party windows apache setup like Xampp.
