Should I be a designer to resell?
I am looking into the host reselling, and find myself wondering if I have to be a designer, or if I could just worry about the hosting?

Re: Should I be a designer to resell?
You can use reseller hosting for whatever purpose you want... Some of our clients are designers, some are startup hosts and some just use the multiple domain hosting to host lots of their own websites.

Do what you're good at, if you can sell & manage but can't design, then do a deal with a deisgner.

Also make sure youre happy doing whatever you choose to do. Nothing can make life miserable like a job you hate. If you just hate part of that, find someone else who looooves it.
I wish you much luck and success!

That's exactly why I'm looking into this. My friend has a well set up client base as a designer, but he doesn't want to deal with hosting, although he gets asked constantly.
As a sidenote. What's a normal charge for hosting service. I mean, I know how much it'sll cost me but I have no idea what a fair price would be to charge a client

Re: Should I be a designer to resell?
I don't want to sound like I am putting you down but do you have any experience as a host?
From your post it doesn't sound like you do - maybe I am reading it wrong but if you are unsure about how much things cost then it sounds like you don't know much about hosting...?
The point I am trying to make is that if you are going to be hosting somebody else's websites - infact somebody else's clients then you need to be 100% sure you are ready to get into this...
As for pricing... Mmm it depends on who will be providing frontline support to the website owners. Technically if your friend is the reseller "client" then they should be providing this support to their clients if on the other hand they want you to provide frontline support then you should be charging a little extra for this.

Re: Should I be a designer to resell?
Well, I guess that's why I am here. I do want to get into the business, but as you said I am not very well experienced, but neither is anybody else when they start.
As per the frontline support, it will be mixed, depending on their needs. Basic maintenance would probably be done on my side, while new pages/redesigns will be taken care by my friend.

Re: Should I be a designer to resell?
You should price your offerings based on your cost to deliver, not what other are doing You'll never compete on price with the "big boys", if you try, then you'll have nothing left in the business account to pay the next bill.
However, many companies are more than prepared to deal with the smaller consultants due to the personal contact and better service available and pay a premium for it.

Re: Should I be a designer to resell?
Well, we all have to start some where and all of us started with zero experience at some point. I would try to talk to as many people who havedone what you want to, as you can. Share your plan with non-friends who are likely to be more honest and blunt.

Re: Should I be a designer to resell?
Thanks for that. I will definitely look into talking to others as soon as I get my "plan" a little more concrete.

Feel free to ask any questions on webhostingworld
Sometimes people don't like my answers - but they are 100% honest

Re: Should I be a designer to resell?
The best answers are often the non-popular ones - well that's my excuse for upsetting people anyway

Re: Should I be a designer to resell?
I welcome all input. If it's honest then there's no reason to be upset, right? I hang out in many forums, and usually they are topics I am not an expert on. THerefore I ask questions, and eventually I can learn and put to practice what the experts recommend.
I learned from Herny Ford, tha tI don't have to know everything, I just need to know the person who knows what I need

No one method will work for everyone. Try experimenting.

Re: Should I be a designer to resell?
I am just learning the design basics right now, so that I can at least have my own site up when I decide to host.

Re: Should I be a designer to resell?
There are no written rules whenever you want to becom a reseller.
being a web designer with a established site do help, but there are people who offer hosting just by putting online a simple, single page for signup and that's all, especially those who benefit from free hosting in exchange of pop-ups or banners displaying.

That's not a bad idea. I might look into that.
