Default Self promotion rules?

Is there any rules regarding self-promotion on the forums?

The web hosting industry is a very competative marketplace, and most hosting related forums have adopted a non-self promotion policy in the normal forums (except the offers forum obviously!)

The only reason I have asked is that we seem to have picked up a serial spammer today but there isn't any definate rules about dropping links into threads?

Lets hope the admin will ban this guy and introduce some rules to prevent this. I moderate over at another web hosting forum and it's a real pain having to purge all the cr*p some people insist on posting

Rules I wanted to lay off from, until I could see exactly what sort of problems may arise and address each type as they happen.

In this regard, the user referred to certainly knew what they were doing in spamming the boards, and has been banned.

I've also added his website to the board censor options.

So even if he should ever become reputable, he's always going to be labelled as a spammer.

I'll get some basic rules written up and displayed for general view - I figure we go for the usual, with the additional WHT practice of censoring spamming companies.

EDIT: Here you go:

Any questions or comments on the rules, let me know.

You'd expect people to actually have the decency to refrain from spamming, some people obviously just need the hand held kiddie treatment

The problem with internet forums is that there are just so many of them!

Spammers just think that it is acceptable to drop a few links and run... If they get deleted...So what?

I am a member of lots of different forums and the best ones are the ones that are strictly modded - I know this goes against what Brian wants to do with WHW but it makes life a whole lot easier (and the forum clearer) if there are strict rules as to what you can post where...

I think it's more the case that WHW was still fresh and new and I was looking to adapt as required, rather than implement a whole set of rules and regulations that may potentially stifle or turn away constructive new members.

But the forum spammers - always good fun dealing with them.

serial spammer
HA! I love that term! Do you think he'll hit this thread next? What will be the next thread victim? Seems like that's good horror movie material to me.

I was in another forum where a porn web chain infiltrated just yesterday. The links were there for anyone to click on.

I am opening two forums this week and one has rules due to the nature of the subject matter and the other has just guidelines in some of the catagories to help keep posting in the right areas.

Over a month without a spammer. I probably should have said anything.
