I use paypal but do not particularly care for it. If you use it on ebay you are getting taken from every possible direction! Listing fees, final value fees, payment fees and withdraw fees.

The joy of modern enterprise. As someone pointed out elsewhere their fees are comparable to others where you pay a monthly fee to process and sometimes in the long run cheaper.

I presume you've never looked at a traditional auction house then? I think you'll find ebay are quite a bit cheaper and a lot more convenient on what you can sell. You'll also get your listing fees etc... on ebay whether you use PayPal or another payment method, so this is hardly a PayPal issue.

The problem is these days everyone expects to get something for nothing, why should everything be free?

Why should PayPal not make a profit? Why should ebay not make a profit? Your bank makes a profit on your balance! You'd not be able to sell your goods on ebay or collect money by PayPal if they didn't exist and to exist they need to pay their bills and pay their staff and reward their investors.

Paypal is really easy to use, but I've also heard horror stories about it - accounts being closed for no reason and balances seized and such - anyone here had such issues?

Monaghan,
True, but most businesses are a little more customer, ie seller, friendly than paypal has become. The issues is that their fees went up, service to their sellers went down when ebay bought it. They ASSUME the buyer is right and the seller a scammer.

I use it as little as possible.

There's no requirement to use PayPal, however when comparing it to a traditional merchant account, then it's cheaper until you get into very large volumes.

You could always do what I do and get 95% of your customers to make bank transfers which (in my case) is cheaper still as the bank doesn't charge me for electronic payments

That may be in case, but if you do everything genuine there are very little chances that paypal will close your account, best to withdraw funds from paypal regularly rather than keep their large sums for which one can not afford to loss by chance.
