Default Opteron vs Xeon

There are some vs threads already so I thought I'd get in the mood and pitch Opteron vs Xeon.

Bottom line for me is that both Dual Opteron and Dual Xeon are good systems and your clients would never know the difference.

I know hosts swear by one or the other but too much bandwagon comes into it. I don't know many personally who have tried both dual opteron and dual xeon systems and been able to benchmark performance themselves and see a difference that can have a significant effect on their business.

I tend to be more of an AMD fan but I am typing this on an dual core P4 at the moment.

I do feel that opterons offer better value for money though imho and google seem to agree as they have announced all new purchases will be of opterons.

When I leased my first dedicated box last year the Opteron vs Xeon case wasn't an issue. Without really pushing the server, I was never really going to see an issue from a consumer point of view.

In the end, I went for a dual opteron because I had better experiences with the AMD brand in PC's at home, and really hated the noisy Intel PC I ended up with.

Yeah, AMD has also been a favorite of mine for years, I was quite excited when they came out with those K6-2 with 3DNOW! And those suckers could be overclocked forever, anyways back to the question at hand I've used servers with both and in todays day and age, can anyone really even tell the difference anymore?
