Maybe, you can contact some webhosting company for a special VPS package. They may not offer you $5/month but it will be cheaper than the regular VPS plans.

You would not find a VPS for $5...that i know of. Although you want to experement you may also want to consider if you want a managed / unmanaged VPS. Also control panel fee's if you require these.

If you want to learn, then why not setup a Linux box at home? A VPS is just like a server, you need to understand how it operates and an insecure "learner" VPS will be just as likely to be hacked as an insecure server.

If you don't have a spare box to install Linux, then you can even get Linux distributions that boot & run from CD

I would just install linux on your own box or dual boot it if you have to!

I completely agree with Monaghan and others too. One cannot look for a VPS keeping in mind the prices for shared or reseller hosting. As you say you are not going to use it too much and it's only for testing purpose, then the idea of setting up Linux box at home is the best for you.

Setting up at home will take a lot more time than opening a small VPS account at almost any provider.

You can also reinstall a VPS with another opterating system with a click on the control panel, rather than reformatting and going through a lengthy linux install process.

Using a VPS is a great way to learn and play around with Linux, with a server thats on 24/7.

So as a VPS provider, you encourage people who have no skills with Linux to learn on a public box that's fully open to being hacked when the customer screws up their settings. Seems an odd stance to take?
