Default HostGator

I've been with HostGator for 2 years and never had one single problem - highly recommended!

I as well highly recommend hostgator. Especially if you can find the coupon codes for the 0.01 cent hosting for the first month! But anyway i currently host myself, but in the past, hostgator has been my goto company.

You've got to be joking. I've got a reseller account with HostGator and every week I have at least 10 minutes downtime.

As it happens, my sites have just recovered from a full hour offline (1 hour and 3 minutes) and so I asked for a refund under their guarantee - they say it was down intermittently, so during that hour they actually had 20-30 failures of 1-2 minutes each which does not add up to enough to drop below the 99.9% they guarantee!

What complete rubbish, and this is similar to 3 or 4 other occasions in the past. I only try to claim the refund now for a laugh - their excuses get funnier each time.

Yeah, I have never been hosted there (thanks God) but I have heard tons of horror stories from 3 really bad hosting services: 1&1, Hostgator, and DreamHost.

I've got accounts at Hostgator, and I'll certainly say they've had issues, possibly from expanding too fast.

However, aside from some overstuffing of some servers, which can cause lag problems until addressed, I've generally not had any real problems to speak of.

However, to be fair, I only host general sites there - nothing essential.

I had an account with HG some time ago (some personal domains under a reseller account) there uptime was hit 'n miss and their server security was terrible...
Some Joomla powered site's were hacked and my account suspended - when I traced the hacker down to Zone-H he had done nearly every account on the server (lots of other peoples websites). I complained like crazy at hostgator support until re-instated the account so I could repair the damage but they refused to tell me which account (or even if it was one of mine) had been originally compromised...

They then said that they were "beefing up" security on the server and making accounts chained root (seperate from other website's on the server) - WHAT!!!! YOU MEAN THEY WERN'T BEFORE

Basic server setup - run a chained root environment, it's not brain surgery guys!

There are a lot of mixed reviews about host gator, i dont need a host but it sounds like its a bit of a gamble if they are going to perform for you or not.

That is probably the worst thing. Just about any popular host you research online will come up with mixed reviews. Nothing in the middle 80% either, is either on the top 10% greatest hosts, or the 10% worst hosts.

That can be from fake reviews though to give a host a bad name. This also comes from different people have different opinions on what makes a good host.

I hear so much about HostGator but the funny thing is, there is always someone out there better than them with better prices. That's just my opinion.

Yeah. It's really not worth it. I doubt any of you personal site owners use 200GB space. Now if you own a business thats a different story. But even if you do, 10 GB's sounds more reasonable.

Yeh that sort of space is only required by Video sites etc. I had a site a while back that wasn't even 1MB lol

Yes, LOL! This is my point. Inless you're planning on running a big project like Streaming Videos, Games and downloads then you don't need to space nor bandwidth.

The same here, only horror stories heard from time to time.

In fact, they are competing with 1&1 and Godaddy for the worst hosting ever.. people say, I've never tried any of these hosting services.
