Do only hosts use dedicated servers? I mean big sites use them, but does anyone have one and not use it to host people? Sry, if this is a dumb question.

Well youcan use your server to sell shoutcast host for example , or sell IRC.

Yes, lots of people use them.

Particularly people that either have a big or high bandwidth site, or those who have a couple sites that they have.

Also most businesses, regardless of size, tend to have their own dedicated server (most have them on site, but lots also have other companies maintain them)

Big sites like that (youtube, etc.) have whole farms of servers (a server farm is 2 or more servers, working in tandem).

I personally am researching dedicated servers for a service I plan to set up in the near future. So, the answer is no, anyone can use them.

Not only hosts use dedicated servers. Some bigger corporations and organizations use them to handle the size of their sites and the volume of their traffic.

You too can use them , if you have huge sites, they dont costs too high , all you need is good knowledge of handling them

Opt for managed dedicated servers if you don't have knowledge of handling the server and there are many hosting providers offering free management with the server.

Generally people who are not sure of their server requirements keep Dedicated Servers as the last option. Its not because of the cost but due to the fact of not using a large number of resources allocated on the server.

People use dedicated server for a lot of other reasons. When I was a kid I used to use it for streaming videos.
