Could some explain proxy sites to me?

I have only recent heard about them but no one seems to want to explain what them are?

I know the basics:

Well basically a proxy server is like a middle man between the sites main server and the user. So if a user wants the site via proxy then the site gets sent from its first server to the proxy server and then to the user.

Main use to bypass security and schools blocking sites thingies. They use double the bandwidth due to data being sent twice.

I'd be very cautious over using a proxy that you don't know all the details of, there are many proxies about, but just remember that everything you enter goes via their software before being passed on to the destination site or returned back to you. This is a potential security risk and you need to know you can trust the proxy with your data.

As Matthew pointed out, they can often be used to access sites that have been blocked by local firewalls in schools/corporates, however although you may be bypassing the local firewall, you are probably breaking the rules of the organisation running the firewall, expect penalties if caught.

If you want to run a public proxy, then consider the fact that you need high bandwidth and any "wrong-doings" will originate from your IP / account so you'll get the abuse reports to deal with.

If you're a kiddie host, then you can still access your reseller account from the school PC as you bypass the school's firewall

I understand they can bypass stuff however i was under the impress kids went to school to learn lol

Apparently kids are learning alright. They learn how to hack around the schools blocks to go where they want.

Basically to bypass blocks like at the office or schools, things like that.
