Dot TK is good but I've run into problems with them before. I recommend paying for your hosting.

i dont really like .tk because there are ads that get into the way of the actual site and make it look bad.

Netfirms has a great control panel. I have a paid and free hosting package through them and can only say one negative thing about them, their support. Their support can be slow and sometimes not help you at all as their responses are pre-typed.

But I would recommend them for sure.

When would you say it is time to pay for hosting? I'm getting close to launching a flower nursery and I want to have a web site for customers to be able to buy. However, funds are TIGHT. Would free hosting get me by and can I switch or upgrade without too much difficulty?

I'd e nervous about running a business on free hosting. You want something that will be there in the morning so you don't have to worry about it and get on with your business.

If you're selling then you'll ideally need an SSL certificate or a complete handoff to a 3rd party payment processing system.

A small but reasonable hosting shouldn't cost more than a few £/month, you can then grow your hosting account as your business grows.

Your hosting would be a tax deductable cost, and if you're that tight on funds, then your business may have other issues more important than the hosting to worry about

Just to add that the servers and resources that host business site's are not the same as those that host general blogs / homepages etc...

A free host will put lots and lots of site's on a single server - to keep cost's down... But an ecommerce store will likely need an SQL database and be php coded - something that requires more server power and a lower number of site's on a single server to be of any use.

That is why I have multiple hosting businesses - to keep business clients and "general" clients apart - business class webservers cost quite a bit more than normal servers, so business class hosting is generally more expensive.

Good luck with your website & business whatever you decide to do about the hosting

I've used 1and1.com for several years with great success. I have to agree with the others here that when it comes to free sites, you get what you pay for!

An update on netfirms. It seems their tech has been slow to address my sudden freeze ups on the forums (not the regular sites) It will be a week tomato.
