Default AMD vs Intel

Looks like Google has made the choice of AMD over Intel:
http://www.platinax.co.uk/news/04-03...s-for-opteron/

I've tended to prefer AMD machines where I can, simply because I have better user experience of AMD - but are AMD really better than Intel?

If so, do Intel chipsets have any special redeeming features?

Apple are now using Intel on their iMac so Intel chips can't be that bad.

For pure bang for your buck value opterons are certainly the number one choice as they seem to exceptionally well priced at the moment.

AMD wins hands down for me...

I can't really explain why - maybe I see AMD as the little boy and Intel as the playground corporate bully?

AMD systems are also cheaper vs their equivalant Intel system

It's Interesting to note that google have made the decision to start moving their 200,000 servers over to opterons.

A mighty good piece of business there for AMD - now if only they could get Dell to start selling them they would be seriously challenging Intel.

Intel has always been a mass consumer favorite just because people trust them. Slowly AMD has been gaining ground because people who know what they are talking about have spread the knowledge that AMD is a better bang for the buck, and often a better bang period. I think that Apple is sort of playing on that, and is showing just how caught up in image and mass-consumerism they really are by choosing to incorporate Intel chips into their 'computers.' Any reasonable person can look past the marketing and appreciate, if not choose, AMD over Intel.

The ultimate Fanboy question

For me, it's AMD - simply because they are cheaper than Intel. Then there's the "underdog" thing - It's nice to see a smaller company steadily grab hold of more and more of a monopolies' market share

I have to confess to using Intel's on the basis that a lot of the business customers we host (who dont have any real geek to them) feel comfortable with the name.

They were probably sold their business systems with Intel chips and told of some advantages (false or not) so when they seek hosting its a comfort to see the same logo?

Im just guessing!

AMD always rubbed me the right way. My intel machine died after a year...my AMD 64 bit system is at 2 1/2 years of great service now. AMD are just better period in terms of power consumption etc.

I will vote for AMD. As far as graphics & animations are considered AMD performs well then that of Intel, but AMD requires much cooling as compare to Intel

Hmm... For web servers? Intel.

I have my reasoning. As a whole, AMD processing is dedicated to single-threadedness. They do one thing at a time, but they do it very fast. Intel, on the other hand, seems to handle multi-tasking better. When you're running multiple services and serving multiple files on a web server, I personally would rather feel comfortable that nothing is going to choke than to go with my favorite company, which happens to be AMD. My computers are AMD-based, and will continue to be. My web server? I vote for Intel, for technical reasons.

I was just recently having this discussion about Intel vs AMD. I definitely prefer AMD from all aspects. Ive had fewer problems with AMD over Intel, even in every day operations and running. As was already hinted at, I got a good cooling bus to keep my AMD system from running too hot. AMD is also becoming more common and more easily recognizeable by the average consumer.

I have always liked AMD over intel. I have always noticed more reliability and although not necessarily faster, they don't seem to lag nearly as much.

My Intel PC is noisy as hell - just bought my girlfriend a Dell AMD - lovely and quiet. Will aim for an AMD machine next time.
