Default Alternatives to Apache

In my recent travels around the net I came across some discussions of apache and how some alternatives may now be better suited for hosting some sites, especially for performance issues.

I can't for the life of me remember what the popular one everyone kept mentioning was, but I seem to think it was some kind of acronym or partial acronym.

Anyone know what i am talking about?

IIS? (windows)
thttpd?
xitami?

Out of those 3 thttpd is the most popular as far as I know...

No idea I'm afraid, but a point worth bearing in mind is software compatibility - many of my sites use software that requires mod_rewrite on Apache, and I'd hate to think of the complications involved on another system without that function, or that behaves in a different way. Nightmare.

From what I've read, thttpd is very fast for serving pure HTML and CGI, however for general purpose web serving with the large array of features that most people use these days, then it's going to be difficult to beat Apache (or IIS if you use Windows).

I think thttpd is what people were talking about. I guess some people were seeing performance gains over apache in some instances when using VBulletin. I was not really comprehending the entire conversation, so it did not sink in really well.
