I have always relied reputation to sell my services online and offline. However, I have started a webhosting company and was wondering if anyone had experience with an effective, low cost advertising campaign. Where do I start?

If you find out... Let me know

Seriously - there are hundreds of thousands of webhosting companies all fighting for exposure... If your budget is LOW then you will struggle to get decent results.

If you have prior reputation with a related business, then it may be worth using that to leverage new customers from your existing client base.

If not, then as Tony says, you've got an uphill struggle.

Personally, I'd always recommend the local market as somewhere to advertise for a starter company, because the competition for hosting is less fierce. Once your reputation for those services develops, it will naturally develop on the web.

2c.

The best one: Word of mouth. It takes a long time, and you always have to give a tip-top service, but when you do - reputation of your business will spread like wildfire

I think image hosting sites (and any free hosting sites for that matter) are a good place to advertise - people will be looking for hosting as they have to use a free (inferior) service to yours. I've heard conversions can be quite good with ads on image sites.

Yeah you cant beat word of mouth, offering a free trial period also works really well, give people a chance to check out what you're worth.

Word of mouth beats all, free trials are great and most of all, reward your clients That motivates them to stay with you.

Some other advertising ideas are: use Myspace, have a contest or offer a freebie and let the big free sites pick it up, get someone doing SEO for you, and of course, get someone to use your services and blurb about it.
