I think technially speaking it is faster then a 1 gig but it depends on your system specs. You can't have a 4 gig ram installed on a older pc.

2GB should be enough for most puproses - 4GB seems excessive for most purposes. How fast is your processor?

You need to look at your memory utilisation, page faults, disk IO and CPU time and then determine which is your bottleneck and spend on the upgrade in the right place.

There is no need to get 4GIG ram enless you do a lot of video editing or 3D rendering.

What about development environments, they take a lot of ram if you have multiple windows open.

Video editing does take a lot of memory, but it's not the only thing that wants memory

Also, remember that to use 4Gb you'll need a 64bit OS as a 32bit OS will not be able to access all of it due to mapping of IO cards spaces into the upper regions of the 4Gb address space. 2.5-3Gb is all you can expect on the average 32bit system. Mine gets about 2.7Gb

Trust me, you can take the fastest computer in the world and have it run no faster than the slowest by clogging it up with useless programs. DELETE is your friend!

Make sure you have both good ram and processor. It won't help to have a bunch a RAM with a crappy processor of vise versa

I have to agree with the general consensus here. 4gb of Ram seems escessive Unless you are doing massive video applications.

Or you can fry your motherboard if it can't handle the ram. I know that mistake all too well.

If the maching can handle it, go with the 4. Trust me...it will be the norm sooner than you think!

Oh...and the same with hard drive space...

My first computer had NO hard drive. The second had 450mb. I was NEVER EVER supposed to be able to fill it up...

Cough....

Tell that to people who play Warcraft, Final Fantasy and download music and video files. You will never have enough speed, memory or storage.

If we did, we'd never upgrade!

I'm running 4Gb on Vista 64bit and this eats ram, I can see 4+ being needed before not too long.

Now that wasn't something I had thought of. Good point. I will make sure not to make that mistake!

The machines get bigger-better-faster and require faster processors, more RAM and of course much better graphics cards!
