Web hosting provider SoftLayer announced on Monday it has opened its second data center facility in Dallas, Texas. The company has furthermore upgraded its core networking infrastructure in Dallas, spending more than $5 million in renovations.

The latest facility more than doubles the company’s server capacity in Dallas with 220 new racks. The facility features its own multiple power feeds supported by independent UPS systems and generators for failover, at the same time as using the same network operations as the existing SoftLayer facility.

The improvement to the first Dallas facility involved a major core network backbone, allowing the company to more efficiently serve customers using the Dallas facilities. The upgrade incorporated the addition of three new Cisco 7600-S routers using the latest RSP-720 Supervisor Engines, an upgrade of all existing 6500-E switches using the latest Sup720-3CXL Supervisor Engines, DDOS and IDS protection with multiple Cisco Guard, and Tipping Point installations with sustained deployment of 40GB to the rack using Cisco 3560-E rack switches.

Improving performance for all SoftLayer clientele, the latest Cisco equipment provides amplified CPU speed, additional memory and far superior routing capacity than its previous equipment.
