In linking its Internet Business Exchange centers in major cities across North America and Asia, Optical networking system provider Infinera has been selected by data center operator Equinix for its metro networks, it announced on Tuesday.

Due to the benefits and global track record of the Infinera architecture including scalability, speed and flexibility of provisioning, and service density were important deciding factors for selecting Infinera to meet Equinix’s requirements of today’s marketplace. Moreover Equinix found that Infinera’s DTN System met its high principles for carrier-class reliability.

Additionally, Infinera’s deployment experience and customer acceptance in North America, Europe, and Asia were decisive factors to Equinix as it was in search of an optical system that had demonstrated it could meet international standards and requirements and function successfully in multiple markets worldwide, says the company.

Lane Patterson, chief technologist at Equinix stated “Some of the world’s largest Internet content providers rely on Equinix’s network-rich interconnection hubs to facilitate their high-performance content delivery operations. To many of these companies, 10Gb has become the new 1Gb, and their need for rapid provisioning of multiple 10Gb wavelengths continues to grow. Infinera enables us to respond quickly to this demand and to provide a highly scalable solution for customers.”

Infinera’s director of advanced optical technologies was recently honored by the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers as an IEEE Fellow.
